Gastown Vancouver
Those who already know about Gastown realize that is one of the most historical locations present in Vancouver. We all know that Vancouver is a city of rich culture and art and gas town definitely takes the job of testifying the fact to its fullest. Gastown is basically located at the northwest core of downtown.
To go back into details of the history of Gastown we will know the Gastown is named after Gassy Jack who was a Geordie seaman and barkeep and he actually happen too open the first saloon ever of the area in 1867. Soon after his solon launch Gastown become a multifunctional commercial area filled with many more saloons, grocery shops, hotels etc. year after year the Gastown managed to flourish in different aspects, over 1000 of building and 3000 of residential areas were build in there by 1886. However it was in the same year when a fire blaze hit the town and turned it into a ground, it was completely destroyed and there was a great economic decline. But in late 1930's many local property owners tried to get the Gastown back on the map and started to renovate the historic and beautiful building and thereby managed to make them one of the best tourist attraction in Vancouver.
It has not been a long time when Gastown had a little bad of a reputation and was involved with serious drugs and prostitutions by oh my if you see it today you will realize how things can change so completely. Today Gastown is not only the most attractive historic place in Vancouver but has managed to appear as the most exciting one too. Today there are about 36 bars and restaurant of diverse styles opened up in there. Some really innovative and creative people have managed to make this place one of the most interesting place to hang around. The best part that people love about Gastown is how it is still gritty and now has the edgy feel too. With many trendy new shops with the touch of blocks you can still feel the historic energy in the air.
Apart from happening bars and restaurants that make Vancouver's nightlife exciting the biggest attraction in Gastown that seems to attract millions is the steam-powered clock which is the world first steam clock ever. This has been created by Raymond Saunders who has definitely managed to prove his creative skills. This steam powered clock actually works with a unique mechanism in which a live steam is pumped from the plant that actually manages to heat over hundreds of the buildings in the downtown, this plant is actually the main operating system and makes the clock work by blowing the whistles. The sound of the Westminster chimes generated through it is just amazing. Many people visit Gastown only to have a look at this amazing piece it is also considered as the best picture spot in Vancouver.
So even if you have missed visiting Gastown on your previous trips to Vancouver regardless of the reason you must do so now as this is certainly not an attraction you may afford to miss.
